Pretty
Woman (1990) Edward is a rich, ruthless businessman who
specializes in taking over companies and then selling them off piece
by piece. He travels to Los Angeles for a business trip and decides to
hire a prostitute. They take a liking to each other and he offers her
money if she'll stay with him for an entire week while he makes the
"rich and famous" scene (since it doesn't do for a man of
his stature to be alone at society parties and polo matches). Romantic
comedy (and complications) ensue. Written by aburner@erols.com
"Casablanca"

Aside from freer language and more explicitly sexual humour, When
Harry Met Sally... is a very traditional romantic comedy, very
much in the mould established ... Nora Ephron wrote the brisk
screenplay for this 1989 romantic comedy, director Rob Reiner made a
nicely glossy New York story (very much in a Woody Allen vein) out of
it, and Billy Crystal's unstoppable charm made it something really
special. Crystal and Meg Ryan play longtime platonic friends who keep
dancing around their deeper feelings for one another, and Bruno Kirby
and Carrie Fisher are their respective pals who fall in love and get
married. Ryan doesn't get a lot of funny material, but her performance
is typically alive and intuitive, and she more than holds her own with
Crystal's comic motor mouth and sweet sentimentality. Reiner is on
comfortable ground, liberated from the burden of making serious
statements in the lead-footed manner of subsequent features. --Tom

Number of Votes: 76. Moonstruck(1987)
Starring: Cher, Nicolas Cage Review: Widely appealing, bittersweet
romantic comedy set in Little Italy. ... When MGM first
released Moonstruck on DVD they inexplicably did so with an inferior
pan and scan transfer. They've rectified this situation with a new
deluxe edition that restores its proper aspect ratio and with a
collection of new extras. Moonstruck was the My Big Fat Geek Wedding
of its day only infinitely better and about an Italian family as
opposed to a Greek one. Watching Norman Jewison's film again, you
realize just how much Nia Vardalos' film is heavily indebted to it. If
Moonstruck is La Boheme than Greek Wedding is Tony and Tina's Wedding.
Some other wonderful romantic gems: Ever
After - A Cinderella Story, This is a wonderful movie. The
premise may be cliché, but this is much, much more than just another
"Cinderella" movie. Its effects are really quite magical--it
will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will totally immerse
you in its spell. If you are human, it will produce a lump in your
throat that will remain there for hours. Some people might call this a
"woman's" movie, but I, as a man, will proclaim that it
really touches my heart every time I watch it, and I freely admit that
it does bring tears to my eyes. I need not go into detail describing
the plot--it is a somewhat modernized Cinderella story, replete with
the evil stepmother, charming prince, and angelic, mistreated heroine.
Instead of a fairy godmother, there is Leonardo da Vinci--an
unexpected but brilliant scripting decision, I feel. There are no
magic pumpkins turning into horses and carriages, but there is magic;
it is the magic of true love.
Over 30 years have passed since Harold
and Maude premiered. Since then, there hasn't been a more
"different" and enjoyable love story about two completely ...Black
comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972,
and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal
Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity
from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance
between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a
life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon).
Most of them were very good, but Sense
& Sensibility really stood out and was the best. Most
thanks to Emma Thompson and her brilliant screenplay, ...Emma
Thompson's adaptation of Jane Austen's novel and Ang Lee's direction
of it prove to be a stunning and talented combination. This story
about the complexities of love, society, and family won my heart in
the first few minutes with its excellent acting, smart dialogue, and
lush period setting.
