Dan HigginsWhat the critics are saying about Jim Self's new CD “InnerPlay” (Basset Hound Records) featuring Gary Foster, Pete Christlieb and Dan Higgins.

Awesome sound of Jazz Tuba and Strings! (You will never again think of the tuba as an “oompah” instrument--in Jim Self's hands it is gorgeou sand fluid--as melodic as Gerry Mulligan or Bob Brookmeyer)

Brad Dechter's arrangements are special! (reminescent of Marty Paich, Gil Evans Nelson Riddle and Bill Holman)

Jim Self with Strings “InnerPlay”

“I always knew about Self, but until I was asked to write an article about him in Jazz Times, I was astonished by what I learned. He is so much in demand in the Hollywood studios as a tuba player (plus his recent invention, the Fluba, a combination flugelhorn and tuba) that he has been heard on over 1,200 sound tracks! That was his tuba that projected those five galactic tones from the mothership in “Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.”

…Self swings his fanny off…and wait until you hear the sheer beauty of his tuba on “I Loves You Porgy”… some tubists get their highs with lows….the entire mood is one of reverential jazz” (from liner notes by Harvey Siders)

Jim has brought together a “who's who” of L.os Angeles' top studio musicians for a classy, elegant recording of 10 great jazz tunes arranged by busy movie orchestrator Brad Dechter. Each of the three session featured a great saxophonist and separate rhythm section playing with Self on three tunes.

The first with Gary Foster, (who's played and recorded with everyone) has Terry Trotter, piano, Tom Warrington, Bass and Steve Houghton, drums.

The second, featuring Pete Christlieb (of Tonite Show Band fame) has Tom Ranier, piano, Dave Carpenter, bass and Steve Schaeffer, drums.

The final session was with Dan Higgins, (famous for his alto work on John Williams' score for “Catch Me If You Can') is with Mike Lang, piano, Ken Wild; bass and Ralph Humphrey , drums. Harpist Gayle Levant is also featured. All these forces were blended with the Jay Rosen Strings by Academy Award winning engineer, Shawn Murphy. Standards like “There Is No Greater Love”, “Pensativa”, and “No More Blues” share the CD with last year's Grammy winning Best Jazz tune, Herbie Hancock's “Speak Like a Child”, originals by Self, “That Morning in May”, and Dechter:, “The Underdog Has Arisen” and Horace Silver's “Strollin'”-- which features everyone.

”InnerPlay”is not just an album it is a work of art. John Hendricks, America’s Poet Laureate of Jazz

“Self is without a doubt one of the most versatile instrumental musicians on the international musical scene today”. Winston Morris, ITEA Journal

“…virtuostic, graceful and lyrical”. Tim Mangan, L.A. Times

“Self possesses an absolutely gorgeous tone… “ Wind Player

On “There Is No Greater Love,” Self rises above the strings with mellow buoyancy, articulating his solo with the ease of one who has complete mastery of his instrument. Don Williamson, JazzReview.com

For those interested in imbibing a musical project with a very distinctive musical approach, this disc will exceed their musical sensibilities. George W. Carroll/The Musicians' Ombudsman

Jim Self is on a mission to prove that the near forgotten tuba deserves a place in modern jazz music. In the opinion of this writer, he's well on his way to proving his point……..It's fine jazz!

Looking like a flugelhorn on steroids, the fluba is a most credible jazz axe.

This has to be the first “tuba with strings” jazz recording…straightahead modern mainstream jazz. Self's interaction with the other horns is delightful--Recommended. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Self gives himself over to music, soaring above the substantial orchestra with fleet, sweet phrases on a choice selection of standards. What a treat! John Stevenson-Ejazznews.com

In fifty years or so, when some enthusiastic graduate student decides towrite a dissertation on the history of “modern” jazz tuba playing, Jim Self's album InnerPlay will be referred to as one of a handful of recordings that were truly revolutionary…..If you enjoy albums such as Charlie Parker with Strings, Chet Baker's last great concert My Favourite Songs Vol. 1 & 2, and the numerous recordings featuring the work of arrangers such as Manny Albam, Marty Paich, Nelson Riddle, and Gil Evans, you are going to love this recording.…..an excellent and highly recommended album. James E. Shearer, ITEA Journal

And wait 'til you hear the FLUBA! (to see a picture of this amazing instrument, a tuba-sized flugel horn go here: http://jimself.com/ )
